There are many types of narrative. They can be imaginary, factual, or a combination of both. They may include fairy stories, mysteries, science, fiction, romances, horror stories, adventure stories, fables, myths and legends, historical narratives, ballads, slice of life, personal experience.

Social function :
To amuse, entertain and to deal with actual or vicarious experience in different ways. Narratives deal with problematic events which lead to a crisis or turning point of some kind which turn finds a resolution.
The generic structures of the text:
Orientation : It sets the scene and introduces the participants (it answers the questions; Who, What, When and Where)
Complication: A crisis or a problem arises. It usually involves the main characters.
Resolution: A solution to the problem (for better or worse). Main characters find a way to solve the problem
Re- orientation : optional

Other generic structures of the text:
Evaluation: (optional) a step back to evaluate the plight (the narrator’s viewpoint)
Coda: (optional)Changes of the characters or lesson/value of the story
Re-orientation: (optional)
Sicnificant lexicogrammatical features :
• Focus on specific and usually individualized participants
• Use of material processes (and in this text, behavioral and verbal processes)
• Use of temporal conjuctions and temporal circumstances
• Use of past tense

The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing


A Wolf found great difficulty in getting at the sheep owing to
the vigilance of the shepherd and his dogs. But one day it found
the skin of a sheep that had been flayed and thrown aside, so it
put it on over its own pelt and strolled down among the sheep.
The Lamb that belonged to the sheep, whose skin the Wolf was
wearing, began to follow the Wolf in the Sheep's clothing; so,
leading the Lamb a little apart, he soon made a meal off her, and
for some time he succeeded in deceiving the sheep, and enjoying
hearty meals.
